EXAM FEAR

"I read it! I knew it all... But I just blacked out."

Most of us suffer from some degree of anxiety when we prepare or sit for an examination. Examination usually leads to a lot of tension and anxiety commonly known as examination phobia. Examination phobia is a mental disorder found in most of the students. When exams arrive, students become extremely worried and make plans about how to study, how to perform better in exams…….


SOME POSSIBLE CAUSES WHICH LEADS TO EXAM FEAR


1. High expectations of parents :-

Studies have shown that high parental expectations are associated with high academic achievement. When parents express high aspirations for their child’s achievement, the kids also try to perform well. But if the parents hopes are unrealistic it can make the child suffer. The researchers found that high parental aspiration led to child’s achievement only when the expectation is realistic. When there is over aspiration it would lead to decrease in child’s performance leaving him overburdened and stressed.


2. Parents competing for higher social status through child's scores :-

When a child talent is not appreciated and is constantly compared to others, the child will not bloom and eventually lose the potential. The child feels ignored and this leads to a care free attitude. If the child continuously receives taunts for he not being better than others its breaks his self confidence and he also start believing that he is good for nothing and this destroys his self-esteem. As a parent, one must not pressurize his/her child to perform well and make him feel burdened rather be a motivation for them to perform well.


3. Irregular coverage of the entire syllabus :-

It happens you have not studied the entire syllabus for your exams and in last few days you are trying to cover the left over portion this would result in cognitive overload, making you feel overwhelmed. Doing this the students tend to forget those concepts which they have thoroughly gone through and leads to poor performance. This fact that you have not completed the entire syllabus itself hinders you from answering those questions which you actually know making you believe that it is from that portion of syllabus which you escaped.


4. Negative thinking and self- criticism :-

It happens at times that after being unsuccessful for many times we tend to develop an attitude that “I Can’t do this”. We become negative about the fact that we can ever achieve our goals. This affect the efficiency of our hard work because now you have a developed a belief that no matter how hard you try you cannot be successful. This reduces self-confidence and hinders your inner voice that motivates you to keep going in direction of your dreams.


FOLLOW FEW THINGS TO AVOID EXAM FEAR


1. Regular Studies Develop good Study Habits :-

ATTEND classes regularly, finish all the classes on time, make notes properly and be an actively participating student in studies. Leave plenty of time to revise so that you don't have to do last minute cramming. Giving yourself adequate time will help to boost your confidence and reduce any pre-exam stress as you know you have prepared well. Instead of waiting for the eleventh hour, start studying as and when the your classes are done with particular topics. With a good amount of time before hand, you will certainly feel more relaxed as you have plenty of time to give-in your best.


2. Exercise Matters :–

Exercise plays a major role to maintain mental, psychological and physical health. Exercising regularly, deep breathing and ‘pranayama’ help in improving one’s cognitive faculties, that results in lesser anxiety and simultaneously better outcomes in the exams.


3. Importance of Diet :-

Be careful about your diet during the exams. Try to avoid junk food as it would make you lazy and feels you sleepy. A diet lacking in essential nutrients can put a major hindrance in your preparations; healthy diet keeps your brain active, focused and helps in better performance during the crucial hours.


4. Sleep well :-

Adequate sleep is also vital. If you study late night and also wake up early morning for studies this would affect your health and reduces your retention power of what you study. It affects you concentration level and don’t let you focus on studies. Sleep should be of 8 hours neither too excessive nor too less. However depending upon your schedule and work load you can make it flexible.


5. Regular Intervals :-

Take short breaks in between and spend some quality time with your family; share your feelings and state of mind with them. Spending time with the family can turn out to be a major stress buster.


6. Set a Study Time:-

Lastly, drawing up a schedule will help you make the most of your study time. Set aside a time for your studies and follow it meticulously. Keep it flexible so that you can make the necessary adjustments.


7. Meditate :-

Meditation is one of the best medicine that can reduce your anxiety. It helps to increase concentration power and helps us to focus in our studies. It works on avoiding distractions and help our brains to grasp things faster. You should Meditate at least 10 minutes per day.


Exams Fear and anxiety are very common in students but this will only lead to poor performance in exams rather students should be aiming to towards their goal in a healthy manner and focused in studies and not actually get tensed……
